Pierre Jourdan, a French Huguenot, was granted the property on December 22, 1694. He named it Cabrière, after the village he had fled near Avignon and there he planted the first vines. Today, the present proprietor of the estate, Achim von Arnim, continues this pioneering spirit by specialising in Cap Classique wines in the Champagne tradition. He has named his range of sparkling wines after the founder, Pierre Jourdan. December 22, 1994 – exactly 300 years after the original land grant – saw the opening of the new gravity-fed Haute Cabrière cellar, topped by an underground restaurant. The celebration on this special day marked the estate’s broadening of emphasis from sole local specialist in Methode Champenoise to a greater involvement in Pinot Noir. Achim von Arnim’s wine-growing philosophy is expressed in a sundial at the entrance to the restaurant. It signifies that quality wine is the product of a mystical synergy between sun, soil, vine and man. This philosophy is expressed in Haute Cabrière Cellar Restaurant, where our customers can enjoy food enhancing the Haute Cabrière and Pierre Jourdan wines. And this is where Nicky and Matthew Gordon come in: Nicky as restaurant manager and master chef Matthew to create delicious dishes to complement the wine. |
